Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku reacted on Friday to the government’s proposal for the Foreign Investment Screening. According to her, the initiative is delayed and half-hearted.

“A delayed and half-hearted initiative, although the request of our American and European Union partners has been clear and repeated, and comes at a very critical moment for the country’s security and strategic orientation,” Tabaku said in a post on social networks.

“Serious screening of foreign investments is vital for Albania, because today, citizens’ personal data is treated as loot; business data is used for fines and pressures; state institutions like AKSHI have been involved in major scandals that are being investigated by SPAK,” she said.

Tabaku, who is also the chairwoman of the Human Rights and Media Committee, further underlined that Albania is at a historical crossroads.

“Either it chooses the European path, with rules, transparency, and American and European investments, or it slips towards shady agreements with third countries, without standards and without security. In an increasingly uncertain world, where national security is not negotiable, the duty of a government is not to produce propaganda and fake news, but to protect Albania from real dangers”, writes Tabaku.

According to Tabaku, the government’s proposal is reduced and leaves sectors vital to national security in the shade. “Therefore, it is no coincidence that the proposal of this delegitimized government is reduced to: a committee on paper, a formal review, and an absurd restriction only on the media sector, leaving sectors vital to national security in the shade. The following are left out: port infrastructure; information technology; software infrastructure and critical systems; defense and military production”, emphasized Tabaku.

Tabaku added that “a comparison with the European Union regulation on investment screening is enough to understand the superficiality and lack of seriousness.”
