The national forecaster has pinpointed when Ireland could face a snow blast this week

Snow is forecast before the week is out

It may not have been a White Christmas but Ireland is likely to see snow before the week is out, according to Met Eireann’s latest forecast.

A cold snap looks set to develop over the coming days, with temperatures plummeting to lows of -4C at times. There remains some uncertainty in the latest weather models, however.

With freezing overnight temperatures forecast over the coming days, Met Eireann has pinpointed Friday as the day when Ireland could experience “some falls of sleet and snow.”

This will continue into the weekend and even next week, with wintry showers very possible and “severe frosts”, particularly in the mornings.

While it will be a chilly end to 2025, no snow is forecast for the next few days as today, Tuesday December 30, will see a somewhat cloudy morning but the good news is that it will turn brighter as the day goes on as sunny spells develop. It will remain dry in most areas, with only some light rain and drizzle which will mainly be confined to the south and east. Temperatures of between 4C and 8C are expected today before it turns much colder tonight, with lows of -4C forecast as frost and ice develop overnight.

New Year’s Eve will be generally dry apart from the odd spell of drizzle near coastal areas in temperatures ranging between 3C to 7C. It will turn cooler into the evening, however, with temperatures potentially dropping to -2C.

New Year’s Day will see a cloudy and drizzly start for Munster and south Leinster but this will clear southwards as the day goes on. Other areas will enjoy some sunshine and experience only well-scattered showers in highs of between 5C and 9C before a major drop on Friday.
