On Tuesday, December 30th, a decision was made to dismiss Diāna Zirniņa, who had been the director of “Gors” in Rēzekne since the concert hall opened in 2013, according to the Rēzekne municipal government.

An extraordinary meeting of the members of the municipal company SIA “Austrumlatvijas koncertzāle” (Eastern Latvia Concert Hall) or Latgale Embassy “Gors” was held to discuss the dismissal of the current board member and the appointment of a new board member.

Commenting on the decision, Aleksandrs Bartaševičs, Chairman of the Rēzekne City Council (“Together for Latvia”https://eng.lsm.lv/”Latvia First”), said: “As the head of the local government, I fully support the decision of the executive branch, and I have emphasized several times that we must all understand that “Gors” is maintained with taxpayers’ money and we must act as responsibly as possible with it. In the current crisis, we must all work together. Unfortunately, we have encountered resistance from the head of Gors herself in our search for a more effective management model. I would like to emphasise that without trying and daring to look for new solutions, the municipality will never be able to find the most effective working model. An analysis of the financial data shows that the concert hall’s expenses are increasing, while its revenues are decreasing.”

Representatives of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development (VARAM) point out that the actions of the Rēzekne municipal government regarding the management of the capital company Austrumlatvijas koncertzāle “Gors,” including the dismissal of its director, do not comply with the principles of good governance, and the legality of the specific decision will be carefully assessed in order to prevent any further diminution of the significance of Gors as a regional cultural venue.

Minister of VARAM Raimonds Čudars comments on the local government’s decision: “I believe that, in making this decision, the city of Rēzekne has also ignored the government’s decision of December 22 to authorize the Ministry of Culture, Smart Administration and Regional Development and the Ministry of Economics to hold talks with the Rēzekne State City Council on solutions for the management of the Eastern Latvia concert hall “Gors” and the state’s involvement in ensuring the accessibility of professional art. It would be irresponsible to make decisions about a change in management without waiting for the results of the negotiations.”
