I know we live in a country that loves personal freedom and doesn’t like being told what to do… But I don’t hate this.
Listen, I get it. The issue isn’t the phones or social media, it’s *the parents*. *THE Parents* need to PARENT. I really do understand.
That being said, if some parents PARENT and some parents don’t, then there is social pressure for the kids being PARENTED to fit in with the kids not being PARENTED. I know that social pressure is stupid from an adult perspective, but I also know how important it is to teens.Â
I think this is probably a first step at trying to develop a better world, and I’m here for it, even if this isn’t 100% the bestest most perfect solution.Â

They did it on Connecticut and it’s been pretty popular. Kids are only allowed to use them during 30 min lunch block.

I Was thinking about some reports demonstrating the overwhelming benefits of not having access to their cellphones for most of the school day in my country and thought this would be impossible in the US.
How are the parents going to be able to hear the sheer horror and despair in their kids last words during the next school shooting if they take the phones away are have students put them in their lockers only?

The bans elsewhere have yielded mostly positive results. Social media is bad for these little developing brains and we’re only starting to see the ways it’s affecting them.

Teachers are about to have the worst time possible enforcing this rule… A lot of kids are have terrible temper, low self-esteem, anxiety, and low attention spans. Some of these kids will 100% spaz out on these teachers.
It needs to be done, however schools have to invest in more muscle to keep these teachers protected.

My middle schooler won’t take hers because she’s a rule follower. I tried to sneak it in her bag and told her she could leave it turned off but have it in case of emergency. She said if it’s that bad we wouldn’t be calling each other.

This is industrial age economics trying desperately to hang on. As Dylan wrote, please get out of the new world if you can’t lend a hand. Instead of banning phones, we should be encouraging students to use them by focusing learning around having encyclopedic data in the palm of their hands.

When did allowing phone use in school become such an issue? Ive had a cellphone since like 5th grade but if you wanted to use it in school you had to hide it, which is how it should be.

In the age of regular shootings, I would require my child to carry an emergency cell phone. I already know several parents who already do this. There was already an incident in Oakland this year where a kid brought a gun to school.
