Oil on canvas by Juan de la Corte (1597–1660), Naval Museum of Madrid.

First time I saw this picture around the 2010s in Madrid, and I was baffled to see a familiar flag in a 17. century oil painting.

The flag was drawn by the Turkish Cypriot artist Emin Çizenel. It was adopted on 7 March 1984 by Northern Cyprus after the TRNC self-declared.

I reached out to Emin Cizenel for comment a few months ago via Instagram, but didn’t get a reply.

For context, the "Battle of Cape Gelidonya" was fought between the Spanish and Ottoman fleets, and the Ottomans lost despite their vast numbers.

According to historical records, this flag was used for only a limited time before being changed.

  1. First of all, Çizenel is a very good last name for an artist. It means “The Drawing Hand”. Anyways, I think you can contact him from his website. At least whatever you write him through there would go to his e-mail.
