I spoke with a teacher friend of mine this evening in Australia, and her comments were that her students attitudes had improved somewhat since the ban here.
Students were texting each other on their phones as always, but they knew who the fuck they were texting to. Social media is a loudhailer that hits everyone. Students are back to passing notes to one another. That’s a good thing.
As the government here has admitted from the beginning, it’s imperfect, and difficult to implement, it will need a lot of work going forward, but every step in the right direction helps.

At first I was against this only from the point that I don’t think this is something that should require government intervention. This seems like such an obvious place for parents to handle this at home, but it’s become clear that a lot of people underestimate or just don’t care about the profound effect that social media and uninhibited access to the internet can have on kids.
So, while I still feel like it’s government overreach I think it’s necessary to keep kids safe mentally and physically. Hopefully more parents and adults will catch on before this kind of government intervention is necessary.

Considering the fact that social media is where most teens and such get news and such from, I do not think this is a good idea.
At least social media lets people form their own opinion and do their own research more when compared to mainstream news

I think the real problem with social media is the uneducated cowardly boomer who lacks any critical thinking skills whatsoever and so they fall for every bullshit post, AI slop, and scammer lie from religion to Trumpism.

i get the intent, but the problem is the enforcement. you can’t actually do this without building massive identity and tracking systems, and those don’t just disappear once they’re created
the alcohol comparison falls apart because the internet doesn’t have a human bouncer. the only way to enforce age online is by collecting more data, centralizing it, and creating new failure points that will eventually be abused or leaked
kids do need protection, but building permanent surveillance infrastructure to solve a parenting problem feels like the wrong long-term tradeoff
