  1. Or perhaps people should look into other methods of commuting that doesn’t involve their private car?

People complaining about traffic on one hand and on the other complain about disincentives to using cars.

We need free public transport within country Dublin and heavily discounted commuter buses and trains.

  4. The port tunnel example is terrible. We should not be framing commuters can’t afford the toll as a negative. The only reason the toll exists is to ensure that commuters do not use the port tunnel.

But Pa Daly does have a point that the public private partnership in place for many of these tolls, like the west link, is totally skewed in favour of the private company running the booths at the expense of the state.

I genuinely believe the Government are happy to let driving become such a miserable experience in the hope that people seek alternatives, even though the alternatives are generally not up to standard.

I tried taking the bus to work for a year but eventually gave up because it was so unreliable and infuriating (ghost buses). I even ended up taking a taxi on a few occasions to avoid being late.

I’m also convinced some people that previously used the M50 have now reverted to the old-fashioned route when going north to south or vice versa. Traffic around East Wall, Ringsend & Sandymount is bumper to bumper in both directions from before 7am.

Another Government failure, spare me the “unprecedented/unexpected demand” or some other excuse. Our Government is eternally reactive and rarely proactive.

Not sure why car ownership in Dublin City just isn’t disincentivised more. Increase the carbon taxing on the sale of fuel inside the M50, increase motortax for cars registered within the M50, congestion charges like London and implement measures for exemptions for people who actually require their car for work or blue badge. It is mind boggling to me the millions upon millions that is spent on public transport, active travel and plans and strategies for dublin in comparison to the rest of the country and yet it’s still the priority when it comes to reducing traffic

My adult children were happy to be able to get the leapcard u25 discount on buses and continue to use public transport but it’s their unreliability and cancellations that is making them move faster to get their own cars. It’s caused them to miss lectures and to be late for work in new jobs. You can’t trust if they’ll turn up.

  8. This infuriates me. Cars are viewed by many as this disgusting blight that must be eradicated.

The truth is there must be a viable public transport system in place if you want to wean the public out of cars. The system must be reliable, frequent and affordable. Otherwise what is the point of heaping tax and penalties on drivers? It won’t change behavior. Or if it does, it will force drivers into an already overcrowded mess of a public transport system.

I’m astonished at people who are making pariahs out of car drivers. The fact is for many there is no alternative or where there is, it’s hugely unreliable.

In school in the 1980s I remember in Geography class being reminded of the PIGS Nations in Europe as being the sick men of Europe. Yet a country like Portugal which arguably hasn’t experienced the apparent wealth we have in the past few decades has a metro in its 2 main cities.

When are people going to realise how successive governments in this country simply didn’t, can’t or won’t make and execute long term infrastructure plans?

I get that cars arent great for the environment but one thing I must really ask of the people who want them gone completely. Does that just mean no more hikes or going to national parks or am i only allowed go to natural spots that are serviced by public transport? If I want to go on holiday down the country do i need to book mad long taxis as the house might not be serviced by public transport?

I studied sociology in college and a big topic was how cars gave people personal freedom trains or bikes didnt to go to farther places and we seem intent to remove that and I just wonder how that works for people who dont just intend to use their car to go from home to work.

Absolutely 💯 agree, the government should be aware that they will alienate the electorate with their ineptitude on transport, the toll increases may become the spark that will bring about a generational change in voting patterns

  12. Plot twist scrap ALL tolls on roads that have been paid for already by the tax payers… They shout and scream about emissions and the like but then charge you to use the road that will get you to your destination most efficiently… Make it make sense…

  13. Captive audience, why would they stop it. No election so zero to gain from it. Yea I’m starting 2026 the way I go on, cynically

  14. And when we are all on public transport they will jack it’s price up to fuck too – if the likes of London is anything to go by. Seems to me the powers that be want us all to live in tiny boxes packed in like sardines and then fleece us every time we open the front door.

As part of the plan, how about the Government also move to eliminate the need for people who live out west, north west and south to travel to Dublin…may I suggest great investment in Shannon Airport and incentives for airlines to utilise it more? Maybe greater investment into business outside of the pale? If I didn’t have to go to Dublin, I wouldn’t. I go out of necessity.

People want more control from the government to solve the problem. People should be allowed to decide how to go to work and should not pay more for that. The government take a big amount in tax from us. I live in Balbriggan and when I go to my office in the city centre I start at 6:10am to be there at 8am. By car it would start at 7:10am. It is 1h per day more commuting. The time that I could be using for something I want. The train is slow, dirt, and sometimes noisy.
