Patriarch Daniel of Romania has sent a message of condolence and prayer following the devastating tragedy that occurred at the beginning of 2026 in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana.

According to Swiss authorities, a fire that broke out during the night of New Year’s Eve at a bar in Crans-Montana, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Swiss Alps, claimed the lives of approximately 40 people and left at least 100 others injured.

In his message, Patriarch Daniel expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic event and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He called upon the faithful to pray for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives, for the healing of the injured, and for spiritual comfort for all those affected by the tragedy, entrusting everyone to the mercy of Christ, “Who is the Resurrection and the Life.”

“With profound sorrow we received the news of the tragic event that occurred on January 1, 2026, at the ski resort of Crans-Montana in Switzerland, in which 40 people lost their lives and approximately 100 were injured,” the Patriarch stated.

“In these moments of grief, we raise prayers to our Lord Jesus Christ, Who is the Resurrection and the Life (cf. John 11:25), for the repose of the souls of the departed, for the healing and swift recovery of the injured, and for the consolation and spiritual strengthening of their families,” he added.
