We have a consensus political party system. All parties try to find middle ground and compromises. It’s not a two party system like in USA.

Misleading title. When it comes to the 10 million initiative, the article is right the other parties are mostly against it without providing any alternative solutions. The swiss citizens though may not be pro SVP but vote for their initiative anyway, as current surveys show.
And in the end, only the vote of the citizens matters.

If I may be so blunt as to ask, hypothetically, as a thought experiment, is there a number of residents in Switzerland that is too high? Is 50 million too much? If so, how about 20? Or 15 maybe?
My first and only approach to this is from a resource limitation point of view. There obviously exists a ceiling for such a small country. Are people opposed to the 10 millions initiative opposed to the notion of a ceiling, or oppose it on the grounds of its support base being UDC/SVP? Would you support another initiative, with another number? Are there specific clauses that you oppose, but not the idea itself?

Just to be clear, we have a dual-speed economy with extremely high global competition for top-tier roles in finance and tech, and uncompetitive local market with mediocre services like hairdressers, restaurants, etc (and I’m being generous with “mediocre”). The latter group is coasting off the extreme competition of the former group, and they get to enjoy strong CHF, high salaries relative to EU counterparts and consequently unmatched global product affordability. This proposal essentially destroys the high-productivity fundamentals of the economy.
Switzerland being rich is not a prerogative, it needs to adapt to the new world or at least not shoot itself in the foot AND this initiative is EXACTLY that. If it passes the amount of self-inflicted damage to the local economy will be crazy.

SVP is the alternative and the smartest option for Switzerland. Enough of not controlling the borders, enough of the influx of refugees (their countries are not the responsibility of the Swiss), enough of flexible treaties with the EU (no to EU membership). If the Swiss want a clean and safe country, Switzerland is the solution. I was an immigrant in Switzerland, now I am Swiss, my son is Swiss, and I am proud of that. You populists don’t know what it’s like to lose a country and have to emigrate. Long live Switzerland!
