Both Zaidis and Ismailis had their own state before the formation of modern yemen. Zaidi imamate and the emirate of Najran. The Zaidi imamate was over a 1000 years old. Honestly as a defacto Zaidi organisation, I’m surprised the houthis haven’t declared the return of the Zaidi imamate. Maybe they’re hopeful that Yemen will somehow stay united.
