“We put on European costumes, but under them we remained as wild as we were. We only took the appearance of civilization, and its soul remained alien and incomprehensible to us.

The best way for a Russian person to forget his own inferiority complex is to seize other people’s lands and teach others to be smart. We could not build our own country, but we have the ambition to teach the whole world how to live.

They say that Russians are a God-praising nation. It is true, they are really religious people. Before they cut your head with an ax, they will surely copy your face.

Russia is a country where everything changes every ten years, but nothing changes in a hundred years. We are going in the same circle—from tyranny to chaos and from chaos to tyranny again.”

Dostoevsky

  1. Do you have a source? I can’t find any evidence Dostoevsky ever said this and it doesn’t sound like him either.

  2. This is a fake quote unless proven otherwise, not only is it impossible to find a source but it is also the exact opposite of what Dostoyevsky usually wrote in his personal letters.

Dostoyevsky believed Russia to be a messianic orthodox martyr state temporarily possessed by alcohol and debauchery because of evil intelligent elites that were corrupted by liberal west.

It is as opposite to text in OP as possible.
