I manually compiled a list of (currently) 123 active startups across Belgium using public sources (company websites, registries, funding announcements) and plotted them by main office location.

The goal was to get a rough geographic overview of where startup activity is concentrated as I often come across these startup maps from SF, Europe, etc, and noticed Belgium itself doesn’t have an accurate one.

Ghent is obviously in the lead. But I’m surprised by how Leuven and Antwerp have a similar number of startups as Brussels.

This is not exhaustive at all, early-stage, stealth, and less visible startups are likely missing. Any correction and additions are super welcome.

  1. So many ChatGPT wrappers that won’t be around in a year, or whenever the money from dad and his investor friends runs out. But at least the founders will be able to give exhilarating talks about what they learned from gathering zero paying customers!

  2. Vooral Vlaanderen, maar geloof echt wel in de oppurtiniteiten van Wallonië. Beetje vergelijkbaar met de rustbelt in de VS.

  3. You’re missing half of Belgium!? I’d start by changing either the title or including the other half…

Is it concentrated in those area’s because of the universities in those cities?

Great start, I would look into the 5 Hubs4Growth start up hubs to further expand on this map. As it combines the 5 main Flemish start up hubs: Hangar K, The Beacon Leuven Mindgate, winter circus, corda campus and Brussels Airport. Should easily find around 300 tech start ups there.

It is a surprising map for me. Wallonia has a large program to attract startups and tech companies. In 2025, I personally talked to one of the program’s representatives at even a small event in Brazil.
