Do you think it’s possible for Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg to unite? If so, would you want it to happen?

Benelux is more united than ever before. From the Benelux Union, which for decades has proven that cross-border cooperation works in practice, to the European Union, which has strengthened and expanded this integration. A common currency, a single market, the free movement of people, goods, and services, and the Schengen Area without internal borders all make Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg function almost like one organism. Also, each of those 3 countries are in the biggest military alliance in history – NATO.

  2. I’m definitely in favor of close cooperation, but uniting as a country isn’t necessary imo. With the Schengen zone and EU, there is no real reason to anyway. Idk, maybe I’m missing something, but would there be any real benefit to uniting?

Though for big projects, I’d like close to see more cooperation (like how the Benelux military is structured). Doing things jointly, on a bigger scale, has real benefits; economies of scale.

Also, just looking at Luxembourg, they most definitely wouldn’t want to join given their tax paradise status.

  3. I’m all up for one thing only: a united tax code so that NL and lux stop poaching our rich companies and rich or educated people in BE.

Especially Luxembourg, being a real parasitic state if we are a tad serious.

Textbook definition of parasitic : cannot live without its hosts and make the life of its hosts harder than if it was not there.

    How is that not Luxembourg?

  4. Best to seek to join one another with the EU. If the EU fails, then sure why not. Our cultural differences are way smaller than what they were back when we split up.

Start with one country at a time. If Belgium can ever unite, then most anything is possible.

  6. If we can’t form a government for Brussels due to the differences between the Flemish and French speakers, it would be even harder to reach a compromise between Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

Luxembourg is doing quite well now, so why would they be interested in becoming part of the Belgian Kafkaesque politics.
