There’s nothing surprising about it. This is an out of touch Boomer headline.

Classic, paywalled article so you can’t actually read the caveats are that you probably aren’t becoming Einstein because you play CSGO but you’ll probably get better at playing CSGO which is a bit of a boost.

Imagine that, using your brain makes your brain work!

Kind of like how walking 5,000 steps vs. running 5,000 steps impact your physical health differently—strategy games and FPS games put a massive cognitive load on your brain in a short period of time.

Playing Phoenix Wright has aided me in shoving evidence to my arguments in my opponent’s face, usually proceeded by “Objection!” or “Take That!”.

I’m semi retired in my 50s and play games like Baldur’s Gate 3. I find it keeps my brain stimulated and helps me practice my problem skills. I also like that it doesn’t rely on my reflexes which are pretty much shot at my age. Keeping cognitively active is essential especially if I decide to rejoin the job market.

With RAM and GPU prices, more than sole article will be needed to boost gaming.

As ever, it depends on the game.
Puzzle elements are no doubt going to be a little better than racer or shooter games, in general.

Interesting. I wondered whether fast twitchy games or strategic\tactical turn-based games or even board games were better for cognition. The study says the former are better, but I wonder what the benefits of slow thinky games are.

Not when you’ve lost sleep from playing too many video games.

70, female, and currently playing through all the Assassins Creed. Played all Zelda’s and recently finished Ghost of Tsushima. I started playing games- however long ago old WOW is now. Still work full time, too. Everyone should play!

Not surprising at all. I really dont understand why people can look at things like reading, playing chess, etc as ways to keep your brain in shape but video games somehow aren’t. Video games require hand eye coordination and a lot of the time both forward thinking strategy and split second decisions. All that seems like a great way to keep your brain working.
When will the stigma against video games go away, when gen x is gone?

On the other end of this I’m curious if there is any decline if somebody gamed frequently their whole life and has moved away from it for whatever reason.
From a personal perspective I’ve been gaming for multiple hours a day for almost 30 years and I’ve dropped that amount to maybe 3-4 hours a week because of my kids, life, etc.
I definitely feel like I’ve mentally declined but I’m unsure if it’s purely exhaustion and a large workload, or if not playing games has a notable effect. Because every time I got to have a little session I definitely feel better.

Curious what the differences would be between an extremely fast paced game like Overwatch and games like BG3 and other non realtime strategy games would be. I imagine they have unique benefits to each.
