PHNOM PENH – Serbia has provided $500,000 in humanitarian aid to Cambodia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said it reflected the solidarity and compassion of the government and people of Serbia toward the people of Cambodia.

It also highlighted the traditional bonds of friendship and cooperation that had united the nations for nearly seven decades.

“The Royal Government of Cambodia attaches great importance to the long-standing and cordial relations with the Republic of Serbia and reaffirms its firm commitment to working closely with the Serbian side to further strengthen and broaden bilateral cooperation across areas of mutual interest, for the shared benefit and well-being of both peoples,” it added.

Cambodia and Serbia established diplomatic ties in 1956.

China has announced nearly $3 million in assistance to Cambodia to help displaced people after the border fighting with Thailand, which was halted by the Dec. 27 ceasefire.

The first batch of Chinese aid including tents, blankets, and food arrived on Dec. 28.

Australia is also providing $250,000 to help Cambodians displaced by the conflict. Australian Ambassador Derek Yip said on Jan. 1 that the aid would be provided through Oxfam for water, sanitation, food, dignity kits and emergency shelter.

The Ministry of Interior said 242,267 people remained at displacement camps on Jan. 4.
