Wow! 299,000 yen monthly? Wondering who’ll be able to afford it. No wonder there’s a long waiting list for public nursing home.

This was true for one of our family members. She went into a nursing home at 88. We paid 30万円 per month and it wasn’t even top of the line. She lived her final 2 or so odd years of her life there but ended up dying in a hospital.

I understand that people want nursing homes to be cheaper, but this is **impossible**. Nursing homes have huge cost called human labour. You’re basically hiring a person semi-full time to take care of your grandma. Of course that worker’s salary is worth 30万円/mo+. So the price to go into a nursing home literally can’t go below the amount being paid to the worker.

Even if you consider that a worker is spending only 0.3 to 0.5 man-month on you, there is the cost of rent (room), food, toiletries, and cooks. You might as well think 30万円 / mo is actually unbelieveable.

That’s why I hate it when people say “Stop the immigrants! Just pay Japanese more!”. As if these people will be happy to take a price hike from 30万円 per month to 50万円 per month. At that price level nursing homes will be completely unaffordable for 80%+ of the population and you’ll end up nursing your own parents at home, which drives people insane most of the time.

  3. Euthanasia may be the solution. I think, for me personally, I wouldn’t mind choosing that option when I’m old and are given the options of whether to euthanize myself or go to nursing home
