Before I explain what happened, this post is there to clarify things, because I didn’t find anything relevant to the case in the sub or others. except for this one online.
I warned the person who placed the order about the fraud several times, but I was ignored.
Be that as it may, the certain person (M, mid-60s, unfortunately not as IT savvy as I thought) saw an ad for a Zeiss thermal imaging camera for a hundred under some newspaper article on the Internet in the strange advertising section at the bottom that is always there. Well, any normal person would ignore it or not even look at it, you would think, but to my shock he ordered straight away and a day later, completely out of the blue, sent me the order confirmation via WhatsApp.
Of course, I immediately shouted that this was cheating and that whatever he could think of, he was just doing it "but the logo was there so it must be real". He probably deliberately ignored the fact that the whole site was obviously AI generated. I was so upset inside, but good, I thought, no matter what, stay calm, cancel the order and maybe you can save the money. He’s like, no, it’s cash on delivery, I didn’t send any bank details anywhere, that’s for sure!
I talked forever. Try to clarify things calmly and prudently. Useless.
Package actually arrives in the mail a few weeks later. Cash on delivery, payment to postman only before taking over, you are not allowed to look at what’s inside before you pay!
Arrived, gave the postman the 100. Sender: Many Qian, just a parcel box with the postal code of a postal distribution center in Austria. What was inside? A BT speaker whose value on common Chinese sites was just in the single digits.
You can, or we will, report it to the police, but I don’t think that will help. In any case, you won’t get what you paid back from the post office, the money has probably gone abroad.
I don’t know, I’m tired, you warn and get ignored. Apart from the argument that arose after the package was opened and it wasn’t the one ordered. At least it was "only" a hundred and not more.
I hope this post enlightens you a little about what seems to be a common scam if you don’t know it, and that people around you can fall for the simplest of scams that you really wouldn’t expect. Does anyone here know of similar cases?
