Have any newspapers covered this? I’d like to read about it if they have.
I guess it won’t be long before AI decides that humanity as whole needs to be terminated.
It’s slander, sue, it’s not like a ‘system’ can be called to testify or even relied on, even if right, to substantiate a claim. . . You’re a thief is a pretty nasty slander as well, it could turn out to be cheaper to let people shot lift than accuse the wrong people of being thieves and liars.
Cool so maybe im not “hyper paranoid” as a friend tells me. Sorry but I dont want AI tracking my face and making arbitrary decisions that no one will bother to double check.
It is on private premises, so you don’t get all the rights you get being in a public space. I did take a look at FaceWatch’s website. They definitely seem to be doing all they can to be well within the law. Only stores owned by the same retailer will be notified when somebody who previously shoplifted from them enters; but any stores using FaceWatch will be notified for people who have been violent regardless of where that was (proportionality). Data is deleted when there’s no match (likely when you leave the store). They claim 99.98% accuracy. It’s probably just the reality of today that this is needed.
I don’t know if it was related but my wife and teenage daughter were stopped and searched at Aldi for simply walking in, looking to see if there were any Christmas trees, immediately finding there weren’t, and then trying to leave again. I was livid tbh. Treating your average customers like criminals is insane when you’re raking in the millions and employing a skeleton crew of staff to man your stores to make even more money.
Remember people, vote with your wallets. Avoid chains that use this Black Mirror shit.
Disgusting that this sort of system is used. It’s all well and good saying it’s privately owned and you don’t *have* to use it, but that’s not really true is it? Especially as more places adopt this technology.
If all the major supermarkets and retailers were to adopt this tech then what really choice do you have to avoid this gross kinda surveillance? It’s only ever going to get more invasive too, regardless of its current system.
Checkout 209: Remove the steak from the bagging area. You have 20 seconds to comply.
Me: I don’t have any steak!

I say we all start acting dead shifty in shops, Constantly, make it so pointless and useless that every person that comes in gets flagged and they will say “this is goddamn useless get rid of it”
How many of the people wrongly targeted are people of dark complexion? The sample of people with dark skin used to train the AIs is much smaller than white people, so the AI systems get it wrong more often.
