I’m writing from Lithuania and there’s been a media problem going on here for months. This isn’t just bad journalism — it’s also emotional exploitation of Türkiye’s national airline and, by implication, Türkiye itself.
The Turkish Airlines Flight 981 crash in 1974 is a deep wound for Türkiye. This disaster, in which 346 people lost their lives, left great pain both in Türkiye and the world. The gravity of this event is still felt and deserves to be remembered always with respect.
However, Lithuanian news portal 15min.lt takes this tragedy completely out of context and shares it again and again, without specifying the date, as if it happened yesterday, just to create fear and collect clicks.
In the last six months — 24 times.
During Christmas week alone — 5 times.
And especially during periods when people travel and airports are crowded.
This is no longer news.
This is no longer information.
This — a model of creating content through pain.
Same photo, same headline, same language of fear.
There is no history, no explanation, no context.
It’s as if the purpose is to stab that fear into people’s hearts again and again.
This situation not only damages Turkish Airlines’ brand value.
This also harms Türkiye’s international perception.
A country’s flag carrier airline is the honor of that country.
Whoever plays with its name actually plays with the image of that country.
I have done a lot for myself:
I contacted media ethics institutions, reported it to the relevant institutions, and prepared a long analysis explaining the situation.
However, as the process progressed, I realized this:
The most important thing that will really get this going is for you to hear about it.
When Türkiye’s voice is raised, this issue can no longer be ignored.
My aim is not to create conflict.
On the contrary — I want the best possible relations to be established between Türkiye and Lithuania.
That’s why it is necessary to talk about this problem openly. Because misinformation, emotional manipulation and irresponsible media language damage the trust between the two countries.
Therefore I ask:
Is there anyone among you who works at Turkish Airlines, is in the media industry, or can help this issue reach a wider audience?
This issue isn’t just about the irresponsibility of a news portal — it’s also about the respectful representation Türkiye deserves.
We can talk either in comments or private messages.
The more people see this, the faster we can reveal the truth and protect reputation.

It’s probably for clickbait to generate revenue. Or it might be funded by some rival airlines for all we know. If no one here can help you you can try contacting Turkish Airlines youself (who knows maybe they’d take it seriously and consider a legal action) or to Lithuanian authorities for misinformation, I don’t know how that works.

bu sabah böyle bir haber gördüm. Gerçekten İsrail, Yunanistan ve Hindistan gibi ülkeler sadece hükümet değil normal insanları da şeytanlaştırmak ve bizi izole etmek için elinden geleni yapıyor. Yunanistan’ın nüfusu 9 milyon ama Çin nüfusuna sahip bir ülke gibi faaliyet gösteren paralı trolleri var. Birazcık sosyal medyada vakit geçiren herkes Türkiye ile ilgili olumlu her haberin altında sinek gibi çoğalan bu trolleri görür. Kedi seven yaşlı sempatik insan videolarının altına bile demek ki kediler Hristiyan değilmiş bu yüzden soykırım yapmamışlar diyen sapık bir güruh. Her türlü gerilimden(Ukrayna Rusya savaşı, Filistin- İsrail savaşı ve hatta Maduro haberleri bile) faydalanarak konuyu Türkiye’ye ve Türklere getiriyorlar. Bireysel Türkiye vatandaşları olarak bizim imajımız için tehlikeli durumlar. Dünyanın öbür ucunda bir insanın bizimle ne derdi olabilir ki dediğimiz şeylerin sebebi böyle şeyler olabilir. Ben iki sene önce böyle şeyleri deli saçması paranoyalar olarak görürdüm. Fakat tuhaf bir şeylerin döndüğü kesin.

Daha evvel Yunanistan bu tip haberleri Türkiye’nin turizmde çok çıkış yakaladığı bir zamanda Rusya’da çalıştıkları iki büyük seyahat acentasına yaptırmıştı. Turizm bakanlığı ve seyahat acentaları hatta oteller bile birleşerek Rus ortakları ile bu olayın üzerine gitmiş ticaret mahkemesi iki şirkete uyarı ve para cezaları vermişti. Bu çalışmayı sen yaptıysan Turizm bakanlığı ile Turizm ve Otelciler birliğine yolla ondan sonra al mısır patlağını izle olanları.
