Eddie Genborng, the Detroit Red Wings’ second pick in the 2025 draft (44th overall), played a key role in helping Sweden win the gold medal at the 2026 World Junior Championship.
Genborg, a 6-2, 205-pound right wing, tied for fourth on the team in scoring with eight points (three goals, five assists) in seven games. The Swedes defeated Czechia 4-2 Monday in the championship game in St. Paul, Minn., for their first gold medal since 2012.
Genborg is described as a physical player who skates well and forechecks hard. He has eight goals and 15 points in 26 games for Timra IK in the Swedish Hockey League.
Bear wins bronze: Carter Bear, Detroit’s top pick in 2025 (No. 13), won the bronze medal with Canada, which defeated Finland 6-3 on Monday. Bear did not dress in the bronze medal game. The right wing appeared in two games during the tournament (no points).
Plante’s tourney cut short: Right wing Max Plante, the Red Wings’ second selection in 2024 (47th), had his tournament cut short by injury, appearing in three games for Team USA (one goal, no assists). The U.S. fell short in its bid to win its third consecutive gold medal, losing 4-3 in overtime to Finland in the quarterfinals.
Wings’ Slovaks finish eighth: Red Wings’ 2025 picks Michal Pradel (No. 75) and Michal Svrcek (No. 119) were on the Slovakian team that finished eighth out of 10 squads, going 1-4. Pradel went 1-3 with a 4.11 goals-against average and .877 save percentage. Svrcek had a goal and an assist in five games.
