“African American” is always interesting and can mean quite different things depending on who you are talking to. In sociology it most often refers to Black people in the US who are descendants from enslaved peoples who were brought to the US. So as opposed to more recent migrants from Africa, and depending on context, even those descendant from enslaved people in say, the Caribbean or South America. It can also just get goofy sometimes, it being such an obligatory-seeming “polite” phrasing that even non-American Black people are occasionally referred to as “African American.”

Only recently did I realize how small the black population is in CA. Ive known a couple people who moved out there and they were taken aback how how small the population really is. I dont think people expect it to be like the south but I thought it be comparable to NY.

I see a generally negative correlation with the USA state wealth and the number of black people as a percentage of the population.

Atlanta is the big anomaly for the upland South which makes the black pop notably higher despite being one of the southern states with more upland pop than lowland. It’s weird to see that trend follow with Maryland being blacker than Alabama (albeit, Virginia is more lowland populated, too. It just does an opposite of Georgia).
In terms of metros, that lower mid-Atlantic black percentage is a lot higher than you’d think in light of numbers in the “Deep South.”
For top 60 metros, the percentages go:
metro | black %
——– | ——
Memphis | 45.7
New Orleans | 37.4
Atlanta | 33.2
Hampton Roads | 28.8
Baltimore | 28.3
Birmingham | 28.2
Richmond | 27.5
Washington | 24.0
Charlotte | 21.6
Detroit | 21.1
Jacksonville | 19.6
Philadelphia | 19.4
Miami | 19.0
Raleigh | 18.5
Cleveland | 18.2
Houston | 17.3

Columbus | 16.1
Chicago, Milwaukee | 15.4

Obviously wrong as Washington residents love to lecture Oregon about how racist and we lack diversity compared to our moral overlords.

When was this stat taken? I’ve seen other stats/vids that said Texas had the highest black population among states.

I’m really surprised that Nevada has a similar percentage of black people to Missouri and Pennsylvania! St Louis and Philly are famous for having huge black populations. Guess there are more black folks in Vegas than I thought.

The Black Population in Hawaii is most likely Military Personnel that is currently stationed there with their families on assignment.
Hawaii has a long-time military base, and many stateside Americans can get stationed there, so thats why the Black Population is 2% there.
Black People in Alaska goes back all the way to the civil war era, when Black soldiers moved out to Alaska in search of oppourtunities and a lot of them stayed in Alaska and raised families there.
Very accurate map.

Now look at this one. I did a project for my undergrad thesis on mapping public data to interesting and fun visuals like this.
I never really don’t understand when a person’s heritage goes from black to mixed to white (or whatever). There was a Milwaukee Buck player (10 years ago) that said he was being targeted by the cops for being black in his car. This dude wasn’t more than 6.25% black (if he actually was). I thought how are they targeting you because you are black because without a 23 & Me print out they would not know.
