Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty received the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg today. The meeting was part of the consultation and coordination between the two sides on developments in Yemen, as well as Cairo’s support of the international organisation’s efforts aimed at reaching a comprehensive and sustainable political settlement to the crisis there.
During the meeting, Minister Abdel Aaty reiterated Egypt’s unwavering position in support of Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, as well as the importance of preserving the state institutions in a manner that safeguards the resources of the Yemeni people and prevents the situation from sliding into further escalation and instability, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Tamim Khallaf said.
He also stressed the need to intensify efforts to consolidate calm, reduce escalation, and create a conducive environment for the resumption of the political process, based on an inclusive Yemeni–Yemeni dialogue leading to a comprehensive settlement that meets the aspirations of the Yemeni people for security, stability, and development, and puts an end to their prolonged humanitarian suffering, Khallaf added.
For his part, the UN Special Envoy briefed Minister Abdel Aaty on his efforts and latest contacts with the concerned parties, and voiced appreciation for Egypt’s supportive role in achieving de-escalation. He also reiterated keenness to continue coordination with Egypt as a central regional actor in supporting security and stability in the region.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian chief diplomat had a telephone call with the UAE’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed, during which they discussed several regional issues, including developments in Yemen, Sudan, and the Palestinian territories.
On the developments in Yemen, the call stressed support for the path of de-escalation and efforts to reduce tensions, as well as backing the national dialogue.
During the call, on Monday, Abdel Aatyagain reiteratedCairo’s stance on Yemen’s, namely preservingthe country’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.
He also emphasised the deep-rooted brotherly relations between Egypt and the UAE, and the close co-operation and continuous coordination at all levels, as well as the shared commitment to building on the existing positive momentum and to further enhancing areas of bilateral cooperation in a manner that serves the common interests of the two brotherly peoples.
The two top diplomats also touched on the Palestinian cause, particularly the current catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza and the West Bank, and efforts to implement President Trump’s peace plan.
They also discussed developments in Sudan and the importance of maintaining the ongoing coordination within the framework of the Quad Mechanism, with a view to advancing efforts to reach a humanitarian truce and to establish safe humanitarian shelters and corridors, leading to a comprehensive ceasefire.
The two sides agreed to maintain close consultation and coordination on regional and international issues, in a manner that would strengthen joint Arab action and contributes to regional stability.
