In the city of Sremska Mitrovica, the fifth annual Ukrainian Christmas carol festival was held. The event took place at the Greek-Catholic Church of the Ascension of the Lord and became an important element in preserving Ukrainian identity among the diaspora in Serbia.

The organizer of the festival is the Society for the Cultivation of Ukrainian Culture (SPUC) “Kolomyika,” which traditionally draws talented ensembles and choirs from various Ukrainian centers across the region.

On the stage of the Ascension Church, leading ensembles and choirs of the Ukrainian community from different corners of Serbia performed: CUK “Kobzar” (Novi Sad), the church choir of the Church of the Holy Trinity (Sabac), KMT named after Ivan Senyuk (Kula), KPT “Carpathians” (Verbas), Sisters Servants of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, KPT named after Ivan Kotliarevsky (Bikych-Do) and the hosts of the festival – SPUC “Kolomyika” (Sremska Mitrovica).

Features of the festival and participants

As part of the event, the preservation of Ukrainian folk songs is celebrated, with carols forming a particularly prominent part of the repertoire. Their tradition has been passed down from generation to generation as a living link to the language, faith, and identity of the community.

The festival underscores the importance of cultural initiatives for the Serbian diaspora and helps preserve the richness of Ukrainian song heritage among both youth and adults.
