Maria Micallef has been appointed chairperson of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development, the government announced.
The MCESD groups representatives of the government, employers, trade unions and other members of civil society.
Micallef has vast experience in the private business sector and also served as chairperson of Air Malta between 2014 and 2017. She is currently a director of companies involved in manufacturing, tourism, insurance and financial services, the government said.
She holds a master’s in strategic and general management from the Maastricht School of Management and is a graduate in chemistry and biology.
Parliamentary Secretary Andy Ellul, who is responsible for social dialogue, congratulated Micallef and stressed the importance of the MCESD in the preparation and implementation of policies for the country.
He said the government is planning to launch a Young Shapers Forum, giving an opportunity to secondary school pupils to be part of the discussion within the council.
Ellul thanked outgoing MCESD chair David Xuereb for his service to the council over the past three years.
