I am back in my Brisbane office this week and have been planning things out for the year with scheduling and worker arrangements etc. It's good to get organized early. I have noticed that this year ANZAC Day 25th April is on a Saturday which means the usual Monday to Friday workers in QLD do not get a Monday or Friday off work.

In some other states they are getting a week day off work, but not QLD this year.

No issue to me personally. Short weeks make my work harder, not easier. At least it’s an earlier Easter this year so they don’t run together.

Don’t worry – ANZAC Day falls on a Sunday next year, so you’ll get the extra day on the Monday then.

Anzac Day is the only public holiday governed by Commonwealth law and the public holiday is always on 25th April. There is only a public holiday on the Monday if Anzac Day falls on a Sunday.

It’s up to individual states if they want to separately proclaim a public holiday Monday if Anzac Day is a Saturday.

  3. Just noticed this yesterday myself, can’t remember it happening in the past is it a recent change? Or just hasn’t come up very often so we’ve forgotten?

  4. Maybe I’m just showing my age, but yeah this is normal.

Anzac Day was created so the population can attend memorials, etc.
That’s the history obviously, but even now, the theory is that a day in lieu – creating a long weekend just for the fun of it – takes away from the “solemn-ness” of the day.

There’s also strict restrictions on shops, pubs etc. that one may not expect on a regular public holiday.

  5. Also Tasmania don’t have Easter Sat/Sun as holidays but have an Easter Tuesday? Weirdos

  6. Next year it moves to Monday for Sunday, but we never get Friday for Saturday in QLD.

    As per the page linked:

Anzac Day public holiday is to be observed on 25 April each year or, if 25 April is a Sunday, it shall be observed on the following Monday.

  7. This gives me the shits every 7 years. Last time I took a day of annual leave on the Monday to compensate.
