Union busting at its finest. I hope that the employees can mobilize a lawsuit that hits Ubisoft even harder in the wallet like the former Amazon employees in Quebec (iirc) are doing. It’s not that difficult to see what is going on here.

Ubisoft is in deep financial trouble so I think the unionization just put a huge target on their backs
Generally the western AAA graphics above everything else model is failing
The engagement are on forever games on PC,consoles and mobile and well scoped reasonable budgeted game. Nintendo are the masters at this. For years some snooty gamers have even ridiculed Nintendo games like Mario or Zelda as not real AAA because their budgets are too small and should not be considered on the same level as the true blockbusters. Looks ljke it was the right strategy all along

Honestly I feel like a unionized game studio would make crappy games, it would be like the government making video games.

This will be unpopular, but people genuinely don’t realize how cumbersome and complicated it quickly gets for a global company to manage unions in multiple geographies. It makes no sense for Ubisoft, a company with over ~~14,000~~ 17,000 employees, to create and manage a whole union apparatus for ~~71~~ 60 union employees, when the jobs can be centralized elsewhere or outsource. If each studio did this, this quickly becomes an exercise of managing hundreds of separate bargaining agreements and an HR nightmare. It’s a whole different story if we are talking about a meaningful number of employees, but for 60 the employer is just going to think it’s a waste of time and resources.
