People focusing on RE are so funny, RE is just tip of the iceberg to what China just announced.

So there’s no way Takaichi will walk back on what she said.
She’s going to plant her feet and stick to her statement, perhaps showing a little sign of ‘but we’re cool aren’t we?’
The public will love how ‘strong-willed’ she is.
Japan’s economy – already in the gutter – is gonna get hit even harder, but yay 70% approval rating!

In 2010, China effectively halted rare earth exports to Japan during a diplomatic dispute. That was a wake-up call. Japan realized it had a single-point failure in a critical supply chain.
Fast forward to today: Japan’s rare earth supply is still roughly 60% from China (dropped from 90%) in the last 15 years. Australia is a pretty big supplier now, and I’ve read they have been stockpiling (just like their rice supply – I kid here) for years. And it also sounds like India is interested in filling the gap….
It’s gonna suck, but I think they’re way better prepared for this day than US did.
The thing is, many Japanese manufacturing companies (including semiconductors) have manufacturing bases in the Philippines and Vietnam.
So unless they ban exports to Vietnam, the Philippines and India this will be a mid-tier inconvenience at most. 😂

Sanae will be gone by 27, this effectively ends any military hopes Japan had . Not only do they have have to contend with a falling yen and massive debts.

How can a country get harshly sanctioned twice within 100 years by two contemporary industrial power houses? This surely cannot happen right🤣

China is playing this card a little early, now everyone is going to have a developed domestic industry or reasonable foreign alternatives figured out by the time a restriction like this is actually needed (read as Taiwan invasion)

To the people were too young to know — this had happened before. This card been played before. China is pulling out the same old Pokémon card.
