Gov’t expects five more foreign universities to apply to set up in Greece

[InTime News]

The government expects to receive more than five new applications from foreign institutions seeking to establish non-state universities in Greece under the latest application round, which closes on February 28, Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki has said.

“There is already interest and, based on the information I have today, I estimate that there will be more than five new applications,” Zacharaki told SKAI TV.

She said the move would create new opportunities for young people, as well as for Greek academics who left the country during the financial crisis and may now consider returning.

In the first round of applications to establish non-state universities, four institutions – the University of Nicosia in Cyprus and Britain’s York, Keele and Open universities – were granted licenses to operate branches in Athens and Thessaloniki.
