I’m proud of my home state Missouri. Our citizen initiative process is a form of direct democracy which allows issues to be placed on the ballot by gaining enough voter signatures. That is how we got minimum wage increases and enshrined reproductive rights into our constitution despite most of our politicians.

Oregon uses a staggered system where it varies from county to county.
Rural counties would be $1 less and Multnomah, parts of Clackamas, and parts of Washington counties (Portland) would be $1.25 more.
“Average population” counties like Lane or Deschutes are $15.05

Florida’s minimum wage is scheduled to increase to $15.00 per hour on September 30, 2026, following annual $1.00 increases from $13.00 in 2023, reaching $14.00 on September 30, 2025, and finally hitting $15.00 in late 2026, as mandated by a ballot initiative approved by voters.

In New York, it’s $16, except for downstate where it’s now $17.
Upstate NY is probably one of the few remaining areas of the country where you can survive off minimum wage.
Minimum wage is also now pegged at the rate of inflation, so it will continue to go up incrementally.

Is it common for people in lower min wage states living near state borders, eg Washington and idaho, to travel to another state to work together get higher pay?
nine_of_swords on
I wish people talking about minimum wage would look at alternate systems instead, like a modified version of what Alabama does. Alabama doesn’t have a minimum wage. Instead it gives tax credits for each new hire who gets paid above a certain amount. If tuned, that would be a much better option, since it also prevents paying under the table. It also would allow for a more graduated system with more benefits for higher wages.

I’d be curious to see what the like, in practice minimum wage is across all the states that are officially at 7.25
Like I know in PA it’s 7.25, but in reality pretty much every major chain I see is offering starting positions at $15, Wawa, Walmart, McDonald’s, 7/11, etc.
No idea how hard that’d even be to estimate.

A very small fraction of the workforce is paid the minimum wage – about 1%. It’s all a red herring in terms of those people.
Organized labor likes to push increases in the minimum wage, because it pushes up the wages of all the workers above that.
And the minimum wage in many markets bears no relationship to typical wages. It may be $7.25 in Texas, but the signs at every Buc-ee’s show $18-20 or more as the starting wage.
