Last night (3am) someone at home heard a man talking on something that sounded like a walkie talkie under our balcony and windows. After hearing it for a while she went to check and the person left. There are footsteps around from the person. We live in Luzern and have been hearing a lot about thieves recently so we are concerned. Does someome know about anything similar?

  1. Thats a situation where you call the police when you hear them around. It may be some neighbour trying to avoid the slippery ice, but thieves are everywhere so better be safe than sorry

    Please. Stop. Overthinking.

Thieves don’t act likes movies, you are not a bank or a high value target, they are (almost) opportunistic and most importantly they don’t expose themselves like that.

(Spoiler : they don’t need to get close or don’t want to).

Sorry I don’t want to be an ass but you are overthinking things here.

  3. If they heard a walkie talkie it could actually have been the police, maybe looking for somebody. I’ve seen them in our neighborhood walking around late a night with flash lights looking in bushes and even going into gardens and around the back of buildings. I guess when they get a call about a crime they’ll do a walk around the area. I live on a third floor balcony so I see a lot.

The footsteps at the back of the building and their placement as well as the time it happened make it seem like someone was possibly checking out the windows. I‘d be on the lookout from now on. As someone who works in a field that deals with crime I do err on the side of caution though.

  5. We live in ground floor. I found similar footsteps last winter, called the police. Few weeks later they tried to break in, they didn’t manage to, police came again, no fingerprints. I installed a security camera. This winter they broke in to cellar. They just keep coming. (Zurich, Oerlikon)

  6. I understand how stressful it is to notice that kind of thing.

Lots of questions in your head.

When a « mystery » happens I almost get crazy lol.

Did you have a look on the police website? Sometimes they provide informations and usually there is a contact form.

Good luck, it’s very intrusive that kind of thing !

  7. What makes me suspicious is the walkie-talkie. If someone really wanted to break into the house or check out the windows or the area, it would be so dumb to bring a fucking walkie-talkie. Why – if it were really, really necessary (which, in my opinion, would never be the case at all) – not call the other guy on a normal phone? In a situation like this, you would try to make as little noise as possible. But yes, obviously someone was there. Maybe it was for another reason (psychological illness, police, etc.).

  8. As has been stated, can also be the police.

Have seen the police here in lucerne walking around with flashlights several times in the dark this week.

I don’t know if it is burglary season, if so we will hear/read about it.

Anyway, be aware of your surroundings, so good job!

  9. The walkie talkie could be intentional as a cover up.

Also doubt that it was police, as they normally go in pairs and the footsteps are for 1 person only.

The direction and placement of the footsteps seems interesting too.

  10. Could be someone getting off the street to take a piss? (Walks there, takes a piss, walks back, from what it looks like …)

  11. First thing is to make sure that grid on the ground (likely celar air vent) is fixed properly from below so it can’t be opened from the outside. Looks like someone was inspecting it.
Stuff for that is available in do it markets.
Then talk to the owner of the building (looks like a rented apartment). It’s in their interests too that no property is damaged in a break in. And if it’s a larger real estate company they might give you some useful advice.
Walkie talkie makes a lot of sense as mobile phones can be traced by the providers and police in case of suspicion.
