HBO Max has revealed the fate of a popular new series.

The medical drama “The Pitt” has been renewed for season 3. HBO CEO Casey Bloys made the announcement on Wednesday, Jan. 7, one day ahead of the season 2 premiere on Thursday, Jan. 8.

Season 1 of “The Pitt” debuted in January 2025, so a January 2027 premiere date for season 3 seems likely. Bloys spoke about the show’s quick turnaround time between seasons during a September 2025 interview with Variety.

“[We] have a group of people who understand how to make 15 episodes, but also how to bring it back on an annual basis. That is the one thing I think that we’ve gotten away from in television, that ability to bring shows back on an annual basis,” he said.

Bloys continued: “It’s understandable, as we have shows that are huge. … ‘The Last of Us’ or ‘House of the Dragon,’ the reason people love them is they’re huge spectacles with special effects and amazing locations. That’s great. But I think maybe as an industry we’ve focused a lot on those, and the bread-and-butter shows churning out high-quality episodes, week after week, is a really tough thing to do.”

The television landscape is crowded with medical shows — “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Chicago Med” and “Brilliant Minds,” to name a few — but “The Pitt” is in a league of its own. Widely praised for being medically accurate, the procedural won five Emmys in 2025, including Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Directing.

Each season of “The Pitt” takes place over the course of one 15-hour shift at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. “ER” alum Noah Wyle leads the ensemble cast as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch. Wyle is also an executive producer.

In addition to Wyle, Patrick Ball (Dr. Frank Langdon), Katherine LaNasa (Nurse Dana Evans), Supriya Ganesh (Dr. Samira Mohan), Fiona Dourif (Dr. Cassie McKay), Taylor Dearden (Dr. Melissa King), Isa Briones (Dr. Trinity Santos), Gerran Howell (Dennis Whitaker) and Shabana Azeez (Victoria Javadi) will reprise their roles in season 2. Sepideh Moafi is joining the cast as Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi.

Season 2 of “The Pitt” premieres on HBO Max on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 9 p.m. ET. New episodes drop every Thursday.
