Isaac Mizrahi has a special compliment for Gwyneth Paltrow.

The iconic fashion designer, 64, exclusively tells PEOPLE about his reunion with Paltrow while playing her character’s publicist in Marty Supreme.

“I used to make clothes for Gwyneth in the ’90s,” he says on the red carpet at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards on Jan. 6 in New York City. “I swear to you, I remember when she used to come in for fittings.”

“She would leave after things, and I’d say that girl has the most fabulous ass I’ve ever seen. She has the best ass in show business, I mean that,” the designer continues.

“That’s the one thing I can remember about Gwyneth,” he says. “Except for the fact that she’s hilarious and so good in this.”

Mizrahi was at the award ceremony to present director Josh Safdie and his co-writer Ronald Bronstein with their Best Screenplay Award. The movie sees Timothee Chalamet as the titular character, an aspiring table tennis player, and also stars Fran Drescher, Odessa A’zion and Kevin O’Leary.

Looking back on his time making the movie, the Project Runway alum says, “You could feel that they’re making something beautiful. When it started screening, people were calling me and saying, ‘Darling, this movie is the best thing since Scorsese.’ ”

“I knew it. I had this idea that [Safdie] was making something career-shaping, you know?” Mizrahi continues.

Much like with Paltrow, the designer goes way back with Safdie. “I’ve known him since he’s a little boy,” he shares. “I met him at my downstairs neighbor’s. He was best friends with her son. We worked together. They made these little films in 2008. I knew him as a young filmmaker.”

Mizrahi is currently preparing for his return to the legendary Café Carlyle for “an all-new evening of music, commentary, and signature charm” in his new A.I. Artificial Isaac show.

The show, which runs Feb. 3 to 21, “is no joke,” he tells PEOPLE. “A lot of rehearsals, a lot of writing and a lot of rethinking.”
