Just saw the A380 change their minds and throttle up over Newtown…

  1. Looks like they’re about to have their 3rd go at it: 1st from the south, 2nd from the north and 3rd, second attempt from the north. The wind and temperature change has been pretty massive in the last 30 minutes.

  2. Southerly change hit on approach? I believe go rounds are about 1 in 1000 which for an airport like Sydney is once every few days.

  3. How much extra fuel is required to be carried? That’s seems like a lot of extra flying for a just over 3 hour root

I saw that from my balcony in Maroubra.

I watch them take off all the time, and when I saw this one I thought to myself something strange is up as it was in the air nowhere near where it’d normally be when they take off to the west to IKEA.

Great to know the reason why now 😊

  5. Ahhh so that’s why an Emirates A380 was over the top of Box Hill; I was taking the rubbish out and it came over top of me. I thought they might’ve been doing some testing for WSI.

Why would the plane divert to Brisbane rather than making another attempt to land in Sydney?

  7. It’s a part of being a pilot that I hadn’t thought about. If you fuck up an approach or landing (not saying it was pilot error in this particular case, just in general), there are several public websites where people will watch what you do and pass judgement on your job performance

Why would it need to get diverted there? Maybe weather here and its the only major airport available?

I saw this too from almost the exact same place! Hopped on flight radar to track.

It was right when the wind started gusting so suspect that was the reason.

Bit crap for them that they’re diverted to Brissie though.

  10. Did the Joburg A380 have trouble today? I didn’t think the weather had changed that much

  11. I’m just NE of the airport, maybe 5km. And the wind gusts here are extreme and unpredictable.

Sitting in my hotel room and saw it with the landing gear out then suddenly ascended out of nowhere and I thought how bizarre, I’ll track this flight – couldn’t for the life of me work out why it had several go arounds then went to Brisbane. Any ideas why there instead of Melbourne? Too congested in Melbourne?

I was flying into Sydney about 3 weeks ago and it had to do a go-around because a plane in front of it hadn’t cleared the runway fast enough
