  1. I dont see the issue

One can get a super visa stay for a while.

You just have to pay for private insurance coverage.

If a canadian resident cant afford rhat coverage then they cant take care of their parents anyways and just brought them over so the canadian tax payer can take care of them.

I am not heartless but with millions who came over recently, the idea everyone can bring their parents is a fools errand.

I understand that it is upsetting but with our healthcare services etc under as much pressure as they are, it doesn’t make sense to bring in thousands of older people who likely have multiple health problems and who do not pay taxes to help support public services

Thank god this is done with. Elderly individuals from underdeveloped countries (recent incomers) have been a massive strain on hospitals in downtown Toronto

Fuck those people who think they can go to shitty private colleges on study visas and bring all of their families over to abuse our health care system. Meanwhile, Canadians have to pay for it and Canadians are the ones in the waiting room.

The sad part for the Canadian taxpayers is that over 30% of sponsors are dead beats, in the end it’s us footing the bill!

  6. Why the fuck would we even consider bringing 60-70 year-olds who will cost our healthcare system thousands while contributing absolutely nothing themselves.

Edit: almost every disagreement has consisted of “well my parents *aren’t* one of the ones contributing nothing”. If that’s your argument then please don’t bother commenting.

There should be absolutely no immigration for seniors. Resources are finite and our health care system is a complete disaster already. We can’t afford to import seniors so they can enjoy OAS, GIS and free health care in their old age that they never paid a dime of taxes towards.

  8. My wife and her family were immigrants. I couldn’t believe that her grandparents could become citizens so easy. Never contribute to the economy, but become massive drains on the social system.

Good.  Go back there to take care of them.  Don’t bring them here and make them canadas problem.  Our infrastructure and services cannot handle it at current rates

  10. I lived in canada for 11 years and never once thought about bringing my elderly father over. If you miss your family so much you can always go back to your home country, I did

  11. These comments have reinforced that we are doing the right thing. We don’t need more old people in Canada. We are already dealing with a rapidly aging population. Why would we welcome more of those in that same category?

  12. Why do we need to import old people who can’t contribute to our society, so they can be a burden on our society and its services and resources?

    Makes no sense.

I don’t think we need more elderly people here. That program made very little sense.

  14. I’m sorry they’re heartbroken but I’m not sorry that we aren’t supporting them anymore. They shouldn’t have been allowed to come in, not having contributed to our society in anyway, and then get access to resources that the rest of Canadians have paid into their whole lives.

Thank god. A ridiculous policy that should’ve never been in place.

Little known fact, after 10 years these people are also eligible for OAS despite never contributing any federal tax over their lifetime.

Moreover, in Ontario, if they come over and can prove some disability they are eligible for ODSP.

Why would we allow old people who cant work and only need care to come here? What is the benefit to that?

I am immigrant and welcome this change. Personally I have seen the condition of healthcare in BC and always wondered why Canada allowed so many seniors free PR and healthcare when they haven’t contributed much too society.

  18. Alternate headline – Canadians with ailing family members relieved to hear their families may start getting healthcare again.

  19. People leave their main country and leave their elderly family members back home. Then expect them to be brought over here and use our limited healthcare resources

I’m as left leaning and pro immigration as they come. But this is a very very very good thing.
