    Was shopping in Finland and saw this adorable brown carton with cute graphics that screamed CHOCOLATE MILK

    My usual move was use Capwords (an app) to recognise and translate but Finnish was not available yet. And I was in a hurry and thought "obviously CHOCOLATE MILKlet’s go."

    Paid. Walked outside. Took a massive gulp.

    IT WAS SPICY PEPPER COOKING CREAM.

    Not "oh interesting flavor" spicy. Full-on steak sauce. My brain literally crashed trying to process why chocolate was attacking me.

      just to avoid future mistakes use google lens to translate to your language, might not be 100% perfect but it will give you some what idea what the product is.

      A Belgian friend of mine was heading on a hike here in Finland, so he grabbed a plastic bottle of cucumber water. After several km he cracked up his bottle of pickling vinegar and didn’t exactly quench his thirst…

      You just happened to have scissors or something on hand to open it? There are like 2 chocolate milks in store and none are size of one gulp

      yea i always read the product names, brands and prices very carefully when im shopping so mistakes like this dont happen. but hey we all make mistakes sometimes 😀

      edit: of course if you are in a hurry this is an understandable mistake and especially if you dont speak finnish well yet.

      KERMA there is pretty close to cream.

      But since it is part of one word, no wonder it is easy to miss.

      Next time you might want to check that there reads maitokaakaojuoma (milk chocolate drink) or something along the lines. Valio’s Play maitokaakaojuoma is regular choccy milk and there’s also minty variation available, which can be found in most of the smaller markets too. I think that’s pretty much the most common choccy milk in Finland these days.

      So you saw all the stuff that was around this with different colors, cheese, herbs etc graphics, no milk around and thought “this must be chocolate milk”?

      Thats still okay.
      I feel bad about the turists buying fresh korvasieni mushrooms. Not knowing that they are poison if not cooked right.

      Just FYI. All Finnish products have Finnish and Swedish text on them. Swedish translates much better and is usually supported in the apps. Often the back of the product also has English texts.

      If you are looking for “chocolate milk”, we don’t have “Suklaamaito” here, we have “Kaakao” or “Kaakaojuoma” (Cocoa) or (Cocoa drink), and often as maitokaakao or maitokaakaojuoma (Cocoa milk) or (Cocoa milk drink).

      Those fraudulent bastards! They are trying to deceive us by writing the word “pippuri” in fairly large letters smack middle of the carton.

      Ruoka – food
      Kerma – cream
      Pippuri – pepper
      that’s all vocabs I know .. If it is milk chocolate drink you should find maito.suklata.juoma..(don’t know if that is correct translation though😅)
      I am still learning the language but I am focusing on vocabularies to avoid mistakes especially in foods 🤣

      Ahh, yes, something brown, gotta be chocolate. No easy drinking access never mind opening access, gotta be a chocolate milk drink. I’m calling bullshit on this one.
