Is there a chance the track could bend?

Steel expands when it gets hot. Rails are steel. They can’t expand length wise so the only way it can go is sideways or up none of which are good for trains so speed restrictions get put in place for this sort of weather so if a derailment happens the damage and potential injuries are reduced. I believe there’s already been some derailments this week, just not on the Sydney suburban lines.

At the Central office for intercity crew they have one of these signs propped up against the wall on days like today.
