As Ukrinform reports, Sweden Herald reported this, citing the words of the head of Sweden’s MFA in an Ekot interview.

Sweden’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Malmer Stenergard, said that the threat from the United States to establish control over Greenland is being viewed differently in light of the latest events in Venezuela.

According to sources, the head of Sweden’s Foreign Ministry expressed these thoughts in an interview, emphasizing a shift in the tone of public statements from the United States.

“Now this is no longer just words from the American administration that differ from those we are used to. We also see that they are ready to act quickly,”

– Maria Malmer Stenergard

The head of the country’s foreign policy department also stressed that she now assumes that U.S. President Donald Trump intends to fulfill his words.

“Now the rhetoric has become even more heated. I take this very, very seriously”

– Maria Malmer Stenergard

She believes that the arguments advanced as grounds for control over the island are based on false assumptions. She also stressed that China’s presence is not as significant as claimed, and Denmark is investing in Greenland for defense reasons.

According to the briefing, the U.S. administration is considering paying Greenland residents a one-time cash payment to persuade them to separate from Denmark and join the United States. Trump’s statements also mention readiness to take Greenland under control “by force” in the event of a refusal to transfer the island to the United States.

The Greenland Parliament plans a meeting to discuss the reaction to the United States’ statements regarding the island’s status. Regarding Greenland’s status: it is an autonomous constituent country within the Kingdom of Denmark, which has had self-government since 2009, though Denmark is responsible for defense and foreign policy. Geographically the island belongs to North America, but politically linked to Europe.

In Venezuela early Saturday morning there were explosions; some parts of the city were left without power. According to reports from Caracas, the U.S. president said about a plan for a “wide-scale strike” against Venezuela, and President Nicolás Maduro and his wife were detained and removed from the country.

Greenland, as an autonomous part of Denmark with its own government, continues to monitor developments and the international community’s response to the unified and multifaceted statements about the island’s status and possible scenarios.
