In an interview with our very own Yannick Pace, Prime Minister Robert Abela reflected on the challenges Malta faces amid global crises, noting that his term has already been shaped by major international events.
Pace highlighted that Abela was the first Maltese prime minister to lead the country through a global pandemic, and asked whether he could become the first to govern during a world war.
Abela responded that this would not be the first conflict he has had to navigate during his tenure. He cited the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and escalations in the Middle East, where over 50,000 lives have been lost, primarily among Palestinians. He also referenced Malta’s historic recognition of Palestine as a state, marking a milestone after forty years.
Commenting on the current geopolitical climate, Abela described the situation as “quite worrying” but expressed confidence in Malta’s ability, knowledge, and maturity to steer the nation through turbulent times.
He added that despite global instability, Malta’s economy would remain resilient, noting that past crises have shown the country can maintain stability even in the face of hardship. “These are times that require leadership with experience and the maturity to navigate complex challenges,” he said.
