Canada looked pretty confident in their first game of the tournament, running away with a 9-0 win over Switzerland on Saturday. Alida Korte scored twice, as she and Racehl Piggott each had three points for the host nation.
Hungary had a rather tough time against Sweden in its first game on Saturday. The team was outshot, 34-14, but goaltender Zoe Takacs put forth a good effort to try and keep things close. Yet, it was not enough, as the Hungarians fell by a score of 4-1. Reka Hiezl scored the lone goal for Hungary.
Canada comes into this year’s tournament having avenged a disappointing 2024 event by winning gold in Finland last year. The red and white have won eight gold medals in the event’s history, making it to the gold medal game 15 times.
The Hungarians are back in the top division for the first time since 2014 after going a perfect 5-0-0 in the D1A U-18s last year. There was a little bit of turnover in last year’s roster, though this squad has a few players that are bound for the NCAA ranks.
