The tourism industry in North Macedonia maintains its positive trend, with foreign tourists identified as the major driving factor behind this growth. Based on reports from the State Statistical Office of the Republic of North Macedonia, in October 2025, arrivals of 109,535 and overnight stays of 204,718 were registered in the country. Additionally, it is estimated that foreigners constituted 78.2% of arrivals and 70.9% of overnight stays in the country, as indicated by the statistics above.
Growing International Demand and Shifting Tourism Trends
The rise in international tourism is especially evident when examining the ten-month period from January to October 2025. The total number of tourists increased by 5.4% compared to 2024, with foreign visitors recording a 9.3% increase in arrivals. However, domestic tourism experienced a 2.3% decline, pointing to a shift toward a more internationally-driven tourism market in North Macedonia. This development highlights the importance of global competitiveness and the need for destination marketing to attract high-value international tourists.
Despite the positive growth in arrivals, the total number of overnight stays increased only slightly by 0.6%, showing that while tourist arrivals are up, there is still room for improvement in increasing the length of stays. Encouraging tourists to stay longer is a key challenge and opportunity for further growth in North Macedonia’s tourism sector.
Opportunities for Growth in Tourism Spending and Stay Duration
While the increase in tourist arrivals is promising, there remains significant potential to boost the economic impact of tourism by encouraging longer stays and higher spending per visitor. This is a common challenge for many emerging destinations, where increasing visitor numbers does not always translate into longer stays or higher per capita spending.
To fully capitalize on the influx of international visitors, North Macedonia’s tourism sector will need to focus on strategies that not only attract more tourists but also ensure they spend more and stay longer. This can be achieved through targeted tourism products like cultural experiences, adventure tourism, and wellness tourism, which encourage visitors to extend their stays and engage with local businesses. Eco-tourism, heritage tourism, and active tourism are areas with strong growth potential, offering experiences that can encourage travelers to stay longer and spend more on local services.
The Role of Policy and Infrastructure in Supporting Tourism Growth
For sustained tourism growth, North Macedonia must continue to invest in tourism infrastructure, including accommodation, transportation, and tourist facilities. Improving infrastructure will make the country more accessible, allowing tourists to easily explore its diverse regions, from historic sites to natural wonders. Additionally, digital solutions for tourist services, like online booking platforms and smart tourism tools, can enhance the visitor experience and streamline processes, contributing to increased tourist satisfaction and spending.
The government can also focus on developing policies that create a more supportive environment for tourism-related businesses, from small-scale operators to large hotels and tour providers. By fostering collaborations between the public and private sectors, North Macedonia can ensure that its tourism industry is both innovative and sustainable.
The Impact of Cultural and Eco-Tourism on Future Growth
North Macedonia’s rich cultural and natural heritage positions it as a prime destination for both cultural tourism and eco-tourism. As global travelers increasingly seek authentic experiences, North Macedonia has the opportunity to leverage its UNESCO World Heritage sites, historic towns, and protected natural areas to create a strong identity in the global tourism market. This growth will also depend on developing and promoting sustainable tourism practices, which can encourage longer stays and ensure environmental conservation.
The rise of eco-tourism is especially important in attracting high-spending travelers who prioritize responsible and sustainable travel. By focusing on eco-friendly accommodations, sustainable tour packages, and nature-focused experiences, North Macedonia can position itself as a leading eco-tourism destination in Southeast Europe.
Sustainable Growth for North Macedonia’s Tourism Sector
Given the continued positive trend of growth in tourist numbers for the country of North Macedonia, the next course of action will need to concentrate on improving the overall visitor experience and working on effective strategies to optimize the number of visitor stays and spend in the country. The success of the country in appealing to global travelers sets the pace for the expansion of the tourism sector.
Through smart tourist destination planning, continued investments in tourist infrastructure, and efforts directed at attracting more long-staying high-spending tourists, North Macedonia has the potential to emerge as one of the top tourist destinations in Europe, especially in the area of eco-tourism, cultural, or heritage tourism. As the region gears up for the challenges facing the tourist sector, innovation and adaptability will lie at the heart of making the tourist sector a sustainable and profitable proposition.
