Sweden, N.Y. — The State Department of Transportation hosted an open house on Tuesday night, inviting neighbors to discuss planned roadway safety updates in the Town of Sweden.

State representatives took questions on the proposed $7.6 million project at State Routes 31 and 31-A with Country Route 236. The plan aims to swap out the intersection with a modern roundabout.

“The reason is simple: it’s safer,” DOT public information officer Mare Millow said. “If we put in a left turn lane, if we leave a traffic signal there, there’s a higher risk of crashes and also a higher risk of serious crashes.

“With a roundabout, people merge into the circle, they slow down — the circle forces them to slow down. If there are crashes, they tend to be less serious.”

If approved, the project would get underway in 2027.
