More than 27,500 citizens have opened bank accounts with a package of free services as of yesterday, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said at the start of a government session, encouraging other citizens to take advantage of the option.

Plenković also called on banks to act in a transparent, open and timely manner, stressing the importance of clear communication with customers regarding the new accounts.

Finance Ministry Issues Guidance to Banks

To ensure consistent and proper implementation of the law, the Ministry of Finance has sent an official letter to the Croatian Banking Association, highlighting banks’ obligation to provide accurate, clear and non-discriminatory information to citizens.

The ministry also emphasised the need for additional staff training, particularly when dealing with older and more vulnerable groups.

Plenković recalled that on January 5, the Ministry of Finance issued a public statement to clarify inaccurate and incomplete information circulating about the scope and use of the free banking services package.

Applications Open from First Working Day of the Year

Citizens have been able to apply for the activation of salary and regular-income accounts with a free services package since the first working day of the year. The prime minister again encouraged all eligible citizens to consider opening such accounts if they wish to benefit from the scheme.

The government has repeatedly stated that the measure is aimed at reducing banking costs for citizens and improving access to essential financial services.
