The US Department of State is expected to suspend processing of visa applications for citizens of about 75 countries, including North Macedonia, starting January 21, 2026. The move is part of a broader review of procedures related to the so-called “public charge” criterion.
According to US media, the decision is based on an internal document sent to consular sections, which states that the suspension will last for an indefinite period, until a reassessment of the way applicants are screened and decided is completed. Exceptions will be very limited.
The list of affected countries includes the name “Macedonia”, which in an international context refers to North Macedonia, along with dozens of countries from Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, such as Russia, Iran, Afghanistan, Brazil, Nigeria and others.
There is currently no detailed explanation of how this pause will affect: the different types of visas (tourist, student, work), applications that are already in process.
The State Department is expected to issue additional guidance through diplomatic missions and official channels.
