Gelonghui, January 17 | South Korea’s Minister of Trade stated on Saturday that the impact of the United States’ announcement to impose a 25% tariff on certain advanced computing chips would be relatively limited for South Korean companies. “Although the government is maintaining a cautious stance in the initial phase, the first-stage measures announced by the U.S. primarily target advanced chips produced by NVIDIA and AMD,” the South Korean trade minister noted. “Given that memory chips, which are the main export products of South Korean enterprises, have not yet been included in the scope of taxation, the short-term impact of this policy is expected to be minimal.” He pointed out, “It is far from the time to breathe a sigh of relief.” He emphasized that uncertainty remains regarding when potential second-stage measures will be implemented and how their scope might expand. He added that the South Korean government will continue to collaborate closely with the industry to secure the best possible outcomes for South Korean businesses.
