Spain Park widened the gap in the second quarter with a 17-7 advantage on the scoreboard, giving it a 26-8 halftime lead. Nine of its points in that frame belonged to Fox, and five of Helena’s points came from Elijah Hudson.
The Huskies started to show signs of life offensively in the third quarter, outscoring the Jaguars 15-11 and cutting the deficit to 37-23. Ferguson and Hudson co-led Helena during that frame with five points each. Five of Spain Park’s third-quarter points were scored by Josh Wilkerson.
The final frame was also high scoring. The Jaguars added 20 points to the Huskies’ 18, leading to the 57-41 final score. Eight of Spain Park’s points in the final period came from Fox and Kade Garcia added seven for Helena.
Fox led all scorers with 21 points and Hudson led Helena in scoring with eight points.
Spain Park (16-8, 2-2 Class 6A, Area 8) takes the floor again on Saturday, Jan. 17, when it faces Hillcrest Tuscaloosa at Brookwood High School at 4 p.m.
Helena (9-13, 2-2 Class 6A, Area 8) also plays at Brookwood on Saturday, Dec. 17. The Huskies take on Pleasant Grove at 11:30 a.m.
