Multiple US media outlets have reported that the US Justice Department is investigating whether Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have impeded federal immigration enforcement.
Protests continue in the state’s largest city Minneapolis, where an agent of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement shot and killed a woman during an immigration crackdown on January 7.
The Washington Post and other media quoted sources as saying the Justice Department plans to serve subpoenas to Walz and Frey.
The two are suspected of conspiring to impede federal immigration enforcement against illegal immigrants.
Walz, the Democratic Party’s vice presidential candidate in the 2024 presidential election, and Frey, who also belongs to the party, are both showing a confrontational stance amid the crackdown.
US President Donald Trump has warned that he might invoke the Insurrection Act to mobilize the military domestically.
Walz said on social media on Friday that weaponizing the justice system against one’s opponents is an authoritarian tactic.
