Croatia’s national team had to dig deep in their opening match against Georgia, edging a 32:29 win after spending long stretches on the back foot. Georgia controlled much of the game, but ultimately lacked the power to deliver a top-tier upset.

“It was a tough match, and I expected it to be like this,” said one of the most experienced players in Dagur Sigurdsson’s squad, Luka Cindrić, in his post-game reaction.

“I think Georgia are a good national team — well organised. They’re awkward to play against when they get momentum. They used our early nervousness, created a gap, and caused us problems. We shouldn’t forget this — we have to be aware of our mistakes and fix them, reduce them to a minimum in the next games.

I’m satisfied. I think the European Championship isn’t easy — every match is close, as we’ve already seen in previous games and again today. We need to take a lesson from this. And in the end, we should be happy with the win and the two points.”
