  1. News snippet: French President Emmanuel Macron, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and other officials voiced support for Denmark, Greenland, and principles of international law in statements denouncing tariff threats on Jan. 17.

Their remarks came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington would impose 10% tariffs on NATO allies — France, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, the U.K., the Netherlands, and Finland — until the U.S. reaches a deal to buy Greenland.

Macron called the tariff threats “unacceptable” in a post on X, saying France’s commitment to sovereignty and the United Nations Charter is the foundation of its ongoing support for Ukraine.

  2. France signaling that their retaliation might be pulling funding from Ukraine seems like a miscalculation. This administration won’t read between the lines and it’s unlikely to be a strong deterrent.

  3. Can NATO say: “We won’t honor our commitments to the US until the current administration changes” ?

    > “The alliance is in deep trouble for no good reason,” Goldgeier told the Kyiv Independent

I’d say the reason is 35 years in the making, as the alliance was allow to exist and expand without a clear purpose. US clearly do not view Russia with the same alarm as Europe, their actions speaks loudly what they think of this alliance. Going after Greenland provides US with a familiar pretext strengthening itself at Europe’s expense.

Hmmm, not because Russia is a security threat to your nation too?

Ok but what if the U.S. just left nato completely…Europe would last 10, maybe 15 years…if Europe wants to hit back it’d be at the hand that feeds, and the fact of the matter is there is not Europe without the U.S.
