The currently proposed €93 billion in retaliatory tariffs are apparently just the beginning. They’re also considering activating the ACI. That would make things a lot, a lot more uncomfortable for Donny. They could exclude companies from EU public tenders or impose special levies on tech companies. If Donny really doesn’t back down, things are going to go really to shit this time. But you can still hope that the €93 billion will be enough to make Donny stop running his mouth so much and pull a TACO.

The plan all along? Threaten Europe, create crisis, buy accordingly before tariffs hit and TACO out. Just market manipulation, with world security as a gamble.

    3. let’s spill some figurative “blood” this time…i really do not get this winner takes all mentality…just 1/3 of americans voted for this…make it a little humble…

      Made them look like fools.

Even if they had planned to trade time for dignity during a long term transition, it certainly felt humiliating and unhelpful.

The tariffs are likely to get thrown out or his ability to use them greatly reduced by the supreme court. The cause is waiting on the ruling and during the hearing it sounded like a majority don’t think Congress gave him this power.

Is anyone else feeling like the next phase will be trump threatening nukes or some absolute nonsense?

this headline vastly underestimates von der Leyen’s abilities

despite their differences, surely she can rally the ministers and find common ground to formulate a revised appeasement proposal forthwith

    8. Why no individual sanctions on trump himself, starting with seizing his shitty golf course in Scotland?

      That would drive him nuts

    9. European leaders are doing exactly the wrong thing. Trump is a child criminal and you need to treat him like a dog that “smells fear” and weakness. Euro leaders should:

      * Use four letter words and their 🖕
      * Call Trump a man child who is trying to make up for his tiny hands.
      * Act like Clint Eastwood and say: “Go ahead Orange Man, make my day! We’ll tariff your bloated obese government and send your population to the bread lines faster than you can say “Kentucky Fried Chicken”.

In other words, project strength, not weakness. A “measured diplomatic response” just looks like an easy meal to a bunch of fascist thugs.

Friendly tip from a California resident…

I’m kind of tired of everything being a reaction to what Donnie’s doing. I wish there were more proactive things happening.

I’m not an idiot, I know that genuinely decoupling from America will cause a ton of hardship for everybody – and that’s WITHOUT the threats of retaliation that are sure to follow – but surely people must see that it’s going to happen anyway. It MUST be the better choice to do it now when there’s still some unity and fight left in Europe, rather than in a few years when the US has singled out nations one by one and taken them out of the fight.

    11. I’ve said it again and again since the first tariffs dropped on Canada- the only way to settle this nonsense for good is a good old-fashioned dog-pile of massive, coordinated retaliatory tariffs from a broad base of US trading partners. Carney is cautious by nature, and too good an economist to be any fan of tariffs, but I could see Canada stepping back up to the plate if it could be framed as “standing firm with our European allies”. If we could entice China to get a few kicks in while the US is vulnerable, and maybe even get Mexico and Latin America involved, the “Tariff King” might suddenly find out that his castle rests on real shaky foundations.

Probably wishful thinking. Still, the more countries that wake up to the fact that there is no point in making deals with or trying to mollify the current US administration, the sooner the globe can work together in putting up a fence around the Mad Dog of America, so that more important matters can finally be attended to.

    12. How many times will it take for Europeans to realize appeasement doesn’t work? It makes the person being appeased greedier.

    13. Europe just simply does not have the balls to stand up to either Russia or America unfortunately. I hope I’m wrong.

    14. wordswillneverhurtme on

I’m not optimistic. The EU usually responds to failed appeasement with more appeasement. We are weak because our military might is weak. Not to mention we are cannibalizing our production capabilities, sowing dissent in member states with unpopular policies, and refuse the ambition of being a hegemony.
