The World Economic Forum has opened its annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. US President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the forum in person for the first time in six years.
About 3,000 people from over 130 countries and regions, including global political and business leaders, are set to take part in the gathering scheduled from Monday through Friday.
Trump is leading the largest-ever US delegation to the forum. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other European leaders are also scheduled to attend.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has expressed a desire to meet Trump on the sidelines of the forum on Wednesday.
Trump earlier announced that the US will charge a tariff on goods from eight European countries that have opposed his bid to take control of Greenland.
High-level talks on Ukraine are also scheduled. It remains to be seen whether negotiators will be able to make progress on the terms of post-conflict security guarantees for Ukraine.
World Economic Forum President Borge Brende told NHK that the old world order is no longer there, and he doesn’t know exactly what the new one will look like. He said he hopes participants will find a way to break the impasse.
